We are announcing the following to help a lone Moroccan brother that is facing 7 years in prison for a crime he might not have committed. The story unfolded as follows:
Mohamed Ismail is From Sale, was pursuing computer science studies when he started chatting with an American single mother. She eventually visited him in Morocco, and they arranged for him to come to the US. He arrived in January of 2005, got married, lived in New York for a short period and the family moved to Los Angeles in late 2005. Shortly after, his stepson’s teacher noticed burns on his body and notified the police. After an investigation, Mohamed was arrested for an alleged physical child abuse and inflicting harm on a child, following claims by the 6 year old stepson. Mohamed’s wife was arrested on neglect charges. Both Mohamed and his wife have been in custody since December 2005, she has no friends in LA, only 4 local people know about them and cannot do much.
Mohamed is facing a maximum of a nine year sentence and he would spent no less than 85% of that in jail; a maximum of 7 years.
The shocking situation is that the wife, has a history of child abuse, has had an abuse case in New York and has repeatedly admitted that she is the one that has burned her child. She has even written letters to the district attorneys and to the judge, but nothing has come of that.
The ironic situation is that Mohamed and his wife have both been offered a deal but they continue to tun it down; they would be released on probation and have the 5 months considered a punishment for the crime.
Mohamed would, although, be deported since we would have admitted to having committed a crime, a deportable offence!
Against all advice, he is determined to go through with a trial and gamble with years of imprisonment and an eminent deportation, to follow. He maintained his innocence and repeatedly stated that he believes in the justice system!
We have had a contact with his public defender, he is not returning call and we are not comfortable with his defense at all!!!
Mohamed is dark complexioned, obviously Muslim and his word will be going against the word of his 6 year old white stepson, in front of a jury of 12.
His trial is this coming Monday, we have found an attorney that will take the case for a symbolic fee, but we need support.
We are trying to have him exonerated and have the charges dropped or have him get off on a lesser charge that would not cause his deportation.
